“Giving Back”

Friday, August 15th, 2008

“During our formative years, my sister Lynda and I had very limited resources. Being cognizant, from personal experience, of what many people live without has provided both of us with a unique understanding of where the disparities in our society are and how important it is for each of us to try to address them - to make a tangible difference. The number of women and children who live in an environment without access to quality health care or health education is far too great for us to ignore. After the birth of my newborns, whom I realized were receiving fantastic medical care, I also realized that my passion was not to just try to increase the access to healthcare for underserved women and children, but to try to improve the quality of this care for everyone, regardless of their ability to pay.”

ABC and Lopez team on “Maid” TV series

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

ABC is developing a TV series based on the hit Jennifer Lopez romantic comedy “Maid in Manhattan.” Lopez will serve as an executive producer of the hour-long comedy-drama, which has received a pilot commitment. In the 2002 feature, she played a struggling single mother from the Bronx who works as a maid at a swanky Manhattan hotel. A rising politician guest (Ralph Fiennes) falls for her after mistaking her for a wealthy socialite. “The show is a different maid in a different Manhattan,” said Chad Hodge, who will write the script for the pilot. The lead in the TV version will still be a young Latina from the Bronx working at a Manhattan hotel who tries to make it in the world. But the series will focus mostly on her relationships with co-workers. “While the hotel’s clientele is an obvious part of this world, I’m more interested in the downstairs part of ‘Upstairs, Downstairs,”‘ Hodge said, referring to the classic British series. Lopez, a Bronx native, has been very involved, providing “a fountain of ideas,” Hodge said. “She will be very integral in the pilot and series,” he said. This is the second time that ABC has taken a stab at a series adaptation of “Maid,” following a script developed with a different writer during the 2004-05 development season. “Maid” could be a suitable companion for the network’s dramedy “Ugly Betty,” which also centers on a hardworking young Latina in New York with big dreams. It, too, was shepherded by a Latina A-lister, Salma Hayek.

Jennifer To Co-Host Event At The Democratic National Convention

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

The Hill: Are Democrats planning on partying more? A spokesman for the Republican National Convention declined to comment. And, of course, everyone wants to know where they can spot a celebrity. Most Hollywood stars come to the conventions via the Creative Coalition, a nonpartisan group that advocates for the arts. The coalition puts on a concert on the Wednesday evening of each convention. The Black Eyed Peas will be playing in Denver, while the Charlie Daniels Band will be jamming in St. Paul.

But competing with them on Wednesday night will be concerts hosted by the ONE campaign and the Recording Industry Association of America. Kanye West will headline the Denver party. The musical guest for St. Paul has yet to be announced. Wyclef Jean will sing on Monday, Aug. 25, at the Democratic National Convention’s Rock the Vote Ballot Bash. On Tuesday, singers Melissa Etheridge, Cyndi Lauper and Rufus Wainwright will perform at a Rock to Win event.

Actress Jennifer Lopez will be co-hosting an event with New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson (D) on Wednesday. And, on that same day, the Creative Coalition will host a brunch with Annette Bening to celebrate her film on female senators that is coming out on DVD in September. Also on Wednesday, Ben Affleck will take part in a panel discussion on international relations, moderated by NBC anchor Tom Brokaw.

Jennifer Appearing In Self Magazine

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

Jennifer Lopez is appearing on the cover of Self magazine, who have made the singer and actress one of their Ten Most Inspiring Women. The “Out Of Sight” actress talked about diverse subjects such as having children, training for a triathlon and setting up her own charity.

Lopez and husband Marc Anthony welcomed their twins to the world in February 2008. However, it seems Max and Emme are keeping their famous parents busy. Lopez has decided not to hire a nanny so that she can feel closer to her children. She has also decided to compete in a triathlon and is being trained by Gunnar Peterson. The singer said she put on 50 pounds carrying her children and had managed to lose most of her baby weight, saying that she is now only 15-20 pounds more than she would like to be.

The actress also explained how she is planning on setting up a new charity for women and children, after being inspired by projects such as Make-A-Wish and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Lopez told the magazine: At this time in my life, with my babies and husband and home, everything feels complete to me. But I do feel like there’s something left undone”.

Also in Self magazine’s list of Ten Most Inspiring Women were Gwen Stefani, Reese Witherspoon and Hillary Clinton.

Jennifer Lopez on the bill for the Democratic National Convention

Monday, August 11th, 2008

When it comes to big name entertainment and partying, it looks like the Democratic National Convention in Denver later this month might have an edge over the Republican gathering in St. Paul in early September. Headlining the bashes to be held during the Democratic convention will be the Black Eyed Peas, Kanye West, Jennifer Lopez, Willie Nelson, Melissa Etheridge and Jerry Jeff Walker. A “crib sheet” showing a whole range of parties, brunches, luncheons, receptions, breakfasts and briefings in Denver that was put together by the lobbying firm of Quinn Gillespie and Associates runs some sixteen pages.

If Denver is going to be party central, the Republican convention is looking more like a gathering at the Country Music Awards. The Quinn Gillespie listing of St. Paul receptions runs only five pages, and the entertainment is mainly country and western, with a decided Southern tilt. Events at the St. Paul gathering include a “Texas Honky Tonk” night featuring Gretchen Wilson, Cowboy Troy and John Rich. The Charlie Daniels Band will also play as will Sammy Hagar at the Southern Delegation Party. The only leading non-country group is a Beach Boys kick-off on the first night of the convention. One big player at both conventions will be the Creative Coalition, which will be sending actors and movie stars to both gatherings. Robin L. Bronk, executive director of the Coalition said the group wants to “lend our voices” to an array of issues including public funding for the arts and education, health care reform and pro-environmental policies. Actors Tim Daly and Kerry Washington will be at the Republican convention, as part of the Coalition effort. Those attending the Democratic convention will include Quentin Tarantino, Spike Lee, Susan Sarandon, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Neil Patrick Harris, Cheryl Hines and Alan Cumming. Many of these actors will appear at a variety of events that the Coalition will be co-sponsoring with a number of corporations. But, for those who want to steer clear of frivolity and go more of a policy-wonk route, there is plenty to choose from too. Here’s one from the Denver convention: “The Next Administration’s National Security and Defense Priorities: A conversation with William J. Perry.”

Lopez won’t testify in Combs shooting lawsuit

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

Jennifer Lopez will not be forced to testify in a lawsuit filed against her ex, Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, over his involvement in a 1999 New York club shooting. The singer/actress was dating the hip-hop mogul at the time of the incident, and was present at the now-defunct Club New York when shots were fired in the venue on December 27, 1999, injuring two people. Combs’ rap protégé Shyne, whose real name is Jamal Barrow, is currently serving a 10-year jail term after he was found guilty of assault, reckless endangerment and gun possession in the trial following the shooting.

The rap heavyweight was arrested for various charges including weapons violations, but was acquitted of all counts. Combs and Shyne are currently fighting a $130 million civil suit filed by victim Natania Reuben, who was shot in the face during the incident. Lopez, who was not called as a witness in the 2001 criminal trial, was subpoenaed by Reuben’s attorneys in June, and was due to give her deposition on Tuesday. But according to Web site TMZ.com, Lopez had “nothing to contribute” to the case, and her deposition was canceled indefinitely, news which has been confirmed by Reuben’s lawyer. The Latina split from Combs shortly after the shooting trial.

Jennifer To Appear In Obama Support Music Video

Saturday, August 2nd, 2008

Barack Obama’s presidential campaign is about to get another boost from a group of his celebrity supporters. Four-time Grammy-winning singer and songwriter Dave Stewart on Monday shared a preview with the Sun-Times of a music video he is creating ”that should be out on the Internet in about 10 days.” The video is built around ”American Prayer,” a song Stewart co-wrote with fellow music superstar Bono on ”a whirlwind trip,” penned in such diverse locales as Dublin, Los Angeles, Miami, London, New York and Cape Town. Stewart also credits ”creative input” on the video and song from Timbaland, Dr. Dre, the Neptunes, Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez.

The black-and-white video includes a wide range of people singing the song — both celebrities and regular Obama supporters. It’s an inspirational kind of musical expression that conveys an upbeat, positive tone reminiscent of earlier projects like the 1985 ”We Are the World” music video, which raised funds for famine relief in Africa. The Obama video showcases a number of singers framed inside a series of television sets, from the 1950s to more contemporary models. Among the well-known Obama backers seen singing in the video are Oprah Winfrey (with her arm around a pensive-looking Beyonce), Cyndi Lauper, Macy Gray, Margaret Cho and Whoopi Goldberg as well as Stewart. In addition, ”we asked permission from Dr. Martin Luther King’s family to use film of Dr. King making his final speech the night before he was assassinated,” Stewart said. The featured clip is the famous line King spoke about perhaps not making it to the promised land. Stewart said the ”tone of the video and the song is very important. . . . This is not just some happy, pop tune; but we aimed to make it an anthem that will inspire people and lift them up, much as Obama’s campaign is doing.” Stewart, who co-founded the Eurythmics with Annie Lennox, next appears in the Chicago area Aug. 29 at Ravinia.
