The race is still on at Self.com! Part III

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

We had so much fun watching Jennifer Lopez, SELF editor-in-chief Lucy Danziger and 3,200 other racers (including quite a few other celebrities!) compete in last weekend’s Nautica Malibu Triathlon that we don’t want the excitement to end. Check back tomorrow for more of our favorite moments from the event.
Thurs1

After swimming half a mile, Jennifer prepped for the 18-mile bike course. The bike leg can be nerve-racking with other racers vying for space, especially around tight turns. But she already had a plan to keep herself up on two wheels: “When I was watching the Olympics, I saw all the bikers down low on their handlebars. But I like holding on right where the brakes are! I want to be ready; you never know when a squirrel or bunny or little rugrat is going to come running out.”

Thurs2

We were so thrilled to see Jennifer having fun during the race—especially while biking. She’s come a long way since the first time she took her bike out on the road.

Thurs3

Two legs of the race down, one to go! Before embarking on the 4-mile run, Jennifer was cheered on by husband Marc Anthony, producer Simon Fields (in black, closest to the cameraman) and her sister, Lynda (she’s behind Jennifer—you can see her hand). When Jennifer started training, she told SELF: “I know that after the triathlon, my confidence is going to be higher. It will be like, ‘I can do anything!’”

Thurs4

A track star growing up, Jennifer has always felt most comfortable about the running leg of the triathlon. “I’m so competitive, it’s crazy! I just have to remember to go at my own pace,” she said.

Thurs5

We showed this photo on Tuesday, but we had to post it again. Her face perfectly relays all the excitement, pride, thrill, joy and exhaustion you feel after reaching such an extraordinary goal. (And those bicep muscles are pretty cool, too.) After tracking Jennifer’s training since early August, we feel like proud friends. Good job, Jennifer!

We had so much fun watching Jennifer Lopez, SELF editor-in-chief Lucy Danziger and 3,200 other racers (including quite a few other celebrities!) compete in last weekend’s Nautica Malibu Triathlon that we don’t want the excitement to end. Keep checking back this week as we post more of our favorite moments from the event.

Wed1

“I suck at swimming! It’s amazing I made it,” Jennifer joked after the race in the VIP tent. We think she was amazing in general! Jennifer swam the choppy, 1/4-mile course in 20 minutes, 52.8 seconds, and came out of the water with a smile on her face.

Wed2

Jennifer was most nervous about the swim leg of the race, especially after her run-in with the jellyfish and huge waves back in New York. But she and trainer Gunnar Peterson did a trial run of the course the day before the race, which helped put her more at ease. Before the start, Marc and Jennifer chatted with a lifeguard. During the swim segment of the race, lifeguards floated in the water on surfboards and jet-skis, making sure everyone was safe.

Wed4_2

Marc (in the white shirt) was nervous for Jennifer, but she looked ready as she waited with other racers in the celebrity wave. Recognize the racer standing on Jennifer’s left, in the black wetsuit with yellow accents? It’s Andy Baldwin from season 10 of The Bachelor. (He finished first in the male celebrity division.)

Wed5_2

Paparazzi and racers’ friends and family lined up along the sidelines to watch the start. See if you can spot Camila Alves, Matthew McConaughey’s girlfriend, in the crowd. She’s holding their new baby, Levi, in a sling. (Hint: Look for Levi’s stark white baby blanket.)

Wed6_2

After the swim, Jennifer dried off and got ready for the 18-mile bike course. She’s about to realize her T-shirt and sneakers are missing! (No problem, though; she borrowed a tee from Gunnar and sneakers from another racer.)

Tues1

We love how ecstatic and proud Jennifer looked when she finished. The crowd was cheering and yelling “Good job, JLo!” Will she do another triathlon in the future? “She deserves a break for now!” said Gunnar Peterson, her trainer. “But I asked and she said, ‘That remains to be seen.’ She’s such a passionate person. She goes after everything with so much, and there’s so much that she does and explores. I wouldn’t be surprised if she did, or if she moved on to another goal.”

2img_2456

Jennifer and her team arrived at the back entrance, on the north end of Malibu’s Zuma Beach. We seemed to be the only photographer in sight!

3img_2457

Husband Marc Anthony was incredibly supportive (even though he was a little nervous for Jennifer). They kissed and hugged between every leg of the race.

4img_2459

Jennifer shared the celebrity transition area with Matthew McConaughey, Eliza Dushku, Scott Foley and Heather Tom from The Bold and the Beautiful, among others.

5img_2463

She was in great spirits from the get-go and introduced herself to other racers.

6img_2511

Celebs competing in a relay transitioned in the area on the other side of the press box. That’s Felicity Huffman in coral, the back of Mad Men’s Jon Hamm (in the blue and white sweatshirt and hat), who swam, and Anna Kournikova (in pink, with her hair in a braid). We also saw William H. Macy, Mark Paul Gosselaar, Tiffani Thiessen (a Saved By the Bell reunion, perhaps!?) and High School Musical’s Monique Coleman.

Lucy helped calm Jennifer’s nerves about swimming in the chilly, choppy Pacific. “You’re going to do great! Just breathe!” she told her.

Biking beauty - Self.com Blog

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

When SELF caught up with Jennifer Lopez and her trainer Gunnar Peterson for a workout, we weren’t surprised to see Jennifer “kick ass,” as her T-shirt predicted. Have we mentioned that we love what a real, unabashed athlete this superstar is? We were shocked, though, that she could bike through a public park without a single paparazzo trailing and without any other bikers and runners noticing the superstar.

“I go all out. I wear the baseball cap, sunglasses, helmet. You’ve got to wear a helmet. And I’ll wrap an old shirt around my waist. Nobody recognizes me, but just in case, I don’t want someone taking a picture of my ass!”

Jennifer’s got nothing to worry about—her body is in amazing shape. (Plus, what’s more attractive than reaching goals like a triathlon and raising money for charity?) She even makes a helmet look sexy. Check her out, hamming it up in the picture above, taken at the bike shop.

Aside from an incognito style, what else is important in a helmet? “You’ve got to go for comfort, but it should fit snuggly on top of your head,” Peterson says. “Those people who perch it on the back of their skull are more worried about getting a good tan than protecting their heads. If you don’t know how to adjust yours, go to a bike shop and let them help you. The interesting thing the pros told us: Even the best helmets are designed for only one impact. If you take a fall, and yours hits the ground, get a new one.”

If you happen to see Jennifer, shhh—don’t tell the paparazzi. Show your support and wish her luck by clicking the Donate button above. And if you’re inspired to transform your body (and feel amazing), check out SELF’s Reach Your Goal program.

You’ve got the power - Self.com Blog

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

We are so inspired after being with Jennifer at the Democratic convention! She had that sexy, healthy, “I’m feeling good about myself and doing great” glow. At SELF, our goal is to help you be the best you can be, inside and out. But the two aren’t mutually exclusive. When you look good, whether it’s because you’ve started working out or tried a great new beauty trick, you’ve got more confidence. And when you feel good, by eating well and staying healthy, your glow is unmistakable.

Nobody knows that more than Jennifer Lopez. She’s a busy woman and devoted mom, training for her first triathlon to raise money for Childrens Hospital Los Angeles and to reach a personal fitness goal. We love her perspective, which is just one reason she’s our Most Inspiring Woman for 2008.

“When I was pregnant—feeling like a beached whale!—I was thinking about the year ahead. I’ve always loved sports and wanted to do something I had never done before. And I decided early on I wanted to do it for charity. I was thinking, What am I going to do the year that [twins Max and Emme] are born? What could I do that they would be proud of their mom? And I just decided to do it and try to raise as much money as I could.

“My body is so much happier hanging out after I’ve done something active. Because then I feel like I’ve earned it. I’m like, You can’t mess with me right now!

“I know that after the triathlon, my confidence is going to be higher. I’m going to feel really good about myself. I know I’m going to respect myself more at the end of the day if I can finish. It will be like, ‘I can do anything!’ I heard someone say once, ‘If you want self-esteem, do esteemable things.’ You have to do things to have confidence. It’s in your hands, it’s in your power.”

Inspired by Jennifer to achieve your own body goals and send your confidence soaring? SELF can give you the tools. Check out our Reach Your Goal program, or our fitness blog, Fresh Fitness Tips for ways to fit exercise into your life.

Getting it right - Self.com Blog

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

Most people hear “triathlon” and think Ironman—a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike and 26.2-mile marathon. “That’s for crazy people!” jokes Jennifer Lopez, who’s training for her first triathlon, the Nautica Malibu Triathlon’s classic distance (a half-mile swim, 18-mile bike and 4-mile run), to raise money and awareness for Childrens Hospital Los Angeles.

Races like the Malibu tri and shorter, sprint-distance events are a challenging and fun way to get in shape, and you never get bored, says Lucy Danziger, SELF’s editor-in-chief and a huge cheerleader for the sport, who will be racing with Jennifer. “If you can bike, run and swim, each separately, you can do it,” Lucy says. We checked in with Gunnar Peterson, Jennifer’s trainer, to find out more about her training.

“The goal is to be comfortable throughout the event. Jennifer should be able to go out to dinner afterward, not check into the ER. We started by focusing on each of the three events individually to lay a strong foundation. Then we began working on the transitions. You don’t need to do the whole event during training, but you try to simulate the race conditions—biking, then immediately running. Or by doing a mini-tri—all three events at shorter distances.

“You’ve got to get used to the race conditions. It’s one thing to swim in a pool that is temperature controlled and another to get into the freezing Pacific with 3,000 other athletes. Other than the usual jitters, nervousness and having lots of people around, there shouldn’t be new demands on the body. So we get out on the bike path and swim in the ocean. That way, when she’s in the water on race day, she’s thinking, ‘Yup, I know what this feels like. I got this.’ Then on the bike, ‘Yup, I’m comfortable. I know this.’ It shouldn’t be, ‘Holy s—! This water is cold! Those waves are crazy! These hills are steep!’”

“Jennifer knows what she has to do and gets it done. She has a great perspective on workouts and what she derives from them. It’s not just about the exercise. Your workout will be better if you realize that by doing it, everything else you do will be a little better, too. You’re better at work and make fewer mistakes. You feel better and so are a nicer person.”

Try it for yourself! Make a commitment to fitness, and let SELF be your partner! Check out our Reach Your Goal program for a step-by-step plan on how to lose weight and get toned, sexy muscles. You’ll see how sticking to a workout not only helps you reach your body goals, but makes you feel incredible, too.

Jennifer In Denver Today

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

There are a lot of reasons SELF named Jennifer Lopez 2008’s Most Inspiring Woman. She runs, bikes and swims! She’s raising money for charity! She’s a dedicated mom and career woman! And she’s shown us that no matter what your job, family and life commitments (of which she has plenty), fitness can help you feel even more like a superwoman and look your healthy best. And now she’s in Denver, giving us yet another reason to be inspired.

Today Jennifer is in the city of the Democratic National Convention to honor a woman who motivates her. She’s hosting a reception for the founder and president of the Children’s Defense Fund, the remarkable Marian Wright Edelman. The event will pay tribute to Ms. Edelman’s lifetime of achievement in ensuring a level playing field for all children and will spotlight the importance of policies and programs championed by the Children’s Defense Fund.

“Ms. Edelman is a pioneer in the fight for children’s rights. The more involved I become with philanthropic activities and wonderful individuals like Marian, the more inspired I become,” Jennifer said.

Check back tomorrow for details from the event, and later in the week for more insights from her training. There are only 18 days left until the race; show your support by clicking the Donate button above and give to Childrens Hospital Los Angeles.

Listen to your body - Self.com Blog

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

At SELF, deprivation is a four-letter word. We believe that if you let yourself indulge occasionally in special foods or treats, it keeps you from overindulging later. Jennifer Lopez subscribes to that philosophy, too; she doesn’t deny or starve herself, and she doesn’t have to now that she’s torching tons of extra calories training for a triathlon. (She’s doing it for charity! If you want to help, click the “donate” button above.) But she has learned some lessons about her diet.

“The one thing I’m getting in order is my eating. I’ve been thinking about that a lot now that I’ve started going longer distances. I’m not eating terrible foods, but I need more energy. The other day I ate Chinese food, then did a mini, mock tri: a swim, then a bike and a run. I could feel the heavy, greasy food slooowwwing me down. By the end of the workout, I was thinking to myself, If I ate better, I’d feel better about now and I’d have more energy. So now I’m working on getting on a good, healthy diet. Today I had a banana before my workout.”

Just as she and her husband are raising their twins sans nanny, Jennifer doesn’t have a personal chef or nutritionist whipping up low-cal power meals for her. She’s learning on her own, just like the rest of us, that easily digestible proteins and carbs like chicken and pasta and fruit and veggies give the fuel you need to feel good throughout an entire workout.

She’s got another incentive to eat well, too. “I want to teach [twins Max and Emme] that there are healthy things that taste good. Growing up, I didn’t eat vegetables. I didn’t know there was brown bread. I’d eat a sugar doughnut, then go to school totally sugar-buzzed. We’d eat hamburgers for lunch, then rice and beans and meat for dinner. Rice and beans aren’t bad, but the meat was always fried. Culturally, that’s just what my mom was fed and so she fed it to us. I want to give my kids the healthy stuff early so they can build on it—then have little treats.”

If you’re looking for an easy-to-follow, high-energy, low-cal eating plan, check out SELF’s Reach Your Goal program.

Feeling stronger - Self.com Blog

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

When SELF editor-in-chief Lucy Danziger trained with Jennifer Lopez for their upcoming triathlon, Jennifer’s natural athleticism shined. (But anyone who has seen her dance could probably have guessed she’s a great athlete. Her moves take serious coordination and fitness skills.) That trait helps during a race, but the physical aspect is only part of the story. You also need mental prowess, and Jennifer’s seems to be in as good a shape as her body.

“With all the different legs, I’m a little slow when I start, then I gradually pick up the pace. I start feeling good and as I’m thinking, I’m fine, I’m fine, I’m fine, I get faster. Not fast like I’m going to break a record time, but like, OK, I’m stronger now. I can do this, I can do this, I can do this.

“There’s a hill at the end of my usual bike course. For about a mile, it’s all uphill. The first time I saw it, I thought it didn’t look too bad. But when you’re on a bike, pedaling after seven miles, it’s hard! What’s most surprising to me, though, is how much the body can accomplish. Your mind just needs to tell your body it can; your body can take it. I’m always surprised at how much I can do.”

We love her determination. A can-do attitude will help you reach your goals, whatever they may be. Jennifer’s, aside from crossing the finish line: Raise as much money as she can for Childrens Hospital Los Angeles. If you can help, click the “donate” link above.

Sitting Pretty - Self.com Blog

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

Aside from chatting with the triathlete herself about workouts, SELF has been checking in with Jennifer Lopez’s trainer, Gunnar Peterson, too. He mentioned that one of the most important parts of prepping for a triathlon is making sure you’ve got the right gear, especially a bicycle saddle that, “won’t have you wincing and swearing with every pedal stroke.” So how did Jennifer ensure she would be comfortable riding the 12-mile cycling leg?

“I got on the ass-o-meter at the bike store. That’s what they call it! You sit on this foam-rubber pad with numbers on it to determine what seat you need. There were three sizes: 130 millimeter, 143 mm and 155 mm. Guess which one I needed? 155. Instead of a tiny, aerodynamic seat, they bring out this bigger thing for me. Ha! But it’s not about the size of your butt! It measures where your bones sit. And you know, it felt so much better than the other seats. I said to myself, Oh my God, now I can do this.”

“It’s not like you’re on a Barcalounger or a beach cruiser bike, but you need to be comfortable,” Peterson adds. “We got bikes by Specialized at Toga Bike Shop in New York and Cynergy Cycles in Santa Monica. Bike shop pros are the sherpas of the cycling world; they guide you through everything. A pro will make sure the pitch and position of your saddle and handlebars and everything else is properly fitted. That will improve how you ride and feel on a bike, giving you more power.”

Jennifer has a great incentive to keep peddling—raising money and awareness for one of her favorite charities, Childrens Hospital Los Angeles—and thanks to her bike, she can feel even better about it, literally!

Jennifer Lopez talks tri and charity in Central Park

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

From the Self.com official Jennifer Lopez blog:

Jennifer Lopez talks tri and charity in Central Park

We’re not the only ones excited that Jennifer Lopez is competing in a triathlon for charity. She and Lucy Danziger, SELF editor-in-chief, were guests on Good Morning America yesterday spreading the news. See the segment.

The pair chatted with anchor Chris Cuomo live from Central Park about raising money for Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, which Lopez has worked with for many years, and the challenges and rewards of training. Her advice to other novices thinking of competing: You can do it, too! “Start slow and give yourself time to work up to your goal,” she said. “It’s hard, but I have more energy, and I feel proud of myself. When I’m training, I keep telling myself, ‘It’s for the kids.’”

The segment was a huge success, except for one hiccup Jennifer had on her way in to Manhattan:

“We were late because we got a ticket by the tunnel! The police told the driver to pull over. I was sleeping in the back, and I’m like, What are we doing sitting on the side of the road?! I gotta be on the air in 15 minutes! Let us go! They didn’t really see me, though. We took the ticket, then drove there as fast as we could.”

Luckily the producers switched the segment’s time slot, and Jennifer made it on the air to inspire even more women. (If you’re one of them, and want to achieve a fitness goal of your own, visit SELF’s Reach Your Goal program.)

“Giving Back”

Friday, August 15th, 2008

“During our formative years, my sister Lynda and I had very limited resources. Being cognizant, from personal experience, of what many people live without has provided both of us with a unique understanding of where the disparities in our society are and how important it is for each of us to try to address them - to make a tangible difference. The number of women and children who live in an environment without access to quality health care or health education is far too great for us to ignore. After the birth of my newborns, whom I realized were receiving fantastic medical care, I also realized that my passion was not to just try to increase the access to healthcare for underserved women and children, but to try to improve the quality of this care for everyone, regardless of their ability to pay.”
